US Cities: Surrogate Measures of Relations, 1990
Travis R. Longcore, Carmen McWilliams and Peter J. Taylor
These data consist of place mentions on the front page of the business section of the following city newspapers: Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, New York Times, and San Francisco Chronicle. This was a data collection experiment using 1990 as sample year within which 24 days were selected for examination. The latter were chosen as follows: the first working day of each month plus the same day the following week. A total of 4246 place references were recorded. There is some analysis of these data in Hierarchical tendencies amongst world cities: a global research proposal (first published as GaWC Research Bulletin 1) and further discussion of the measurement methodology in Globalization and world cities: some measurement methodologies (first published as GaWC Research Bulletin 2).
